Why do freckles appear?

Freckles (ephelides) are epidermal pigment spots influenced by genetics and UV exposure.

Freckles are highly responsive to specific wavelengths because of their optical/structural properties.
The most effective for epidermal freckles is typically 532 nm.
Since freckles are mostly localized melanin granules in the basal layer of the epidermis, 532 nm’s selective action is an excellent match.

About the 532 nm wavelength

532 nm (green light) lies near a peak absorption range for melanin, so it targets epidermal lesions selectively.
In Q-switched mode, it delivers nanosecond pulses of high energy, fragmenting pigment via photothermal and photomechanical effects.
The fragmented pigment is shed as micro-crusts or cleared by phagocytes via the lymphatics, making freckles visibly lighter or cleared.
