Why Do Lentigines Form?

Solar lentigines are flat brown macules caused by UV exposure and intrinsic aging.

UV repeatedly hyperactivates melanocytes, leading to localized melanin accumulation. With age, turnover slows and discoloration becomes darker and broader—commonly on the face, hands, and arms with sharp borders.

Where Are They Located?

Lentigines are confined to the epidermis, especially the basal layer, with no dermal invasion on histology.

Because they are epidermal, they respond well to Q-switched 532 nm lasers—distinct from dermal or mixed pigment (e.g., melasma).

About the 532 nm Wavelength

532 nm (green light) sits near the absorption peak for melanin, making it ideal for epidermal lesions.

In Q-switched mode, it delivers nanosecond pulses of high power that melanized particles absorb and convert to heat and a photomechanical effect, fragmenting pigment.

Debris then desquamates as crust or is phagocytosed and cleared via the lymphatics—visibly lightening or clearing the spot.
